Lieutenant Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel Randall entered the
service of the United States as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A, 12th New York
Infantry, and was afterwards promoted to Captain in that command at the
age of 29.
He first joined the 149th in the month of March,
1863, under a commission as Major dated March 17, 1863, rank same date but
was not mustered. He subsequently received a commission as
Lieutenant Colonel dated June 5, 1863, rank march 1, 1863, under which he
was mustered June 8, 1863 at Acquia Creek, Va. and immediately assumed
command of the regiment.
At Gettysburg, PA, July 3, 1863, he received a
severe gunshot wound in the arm and lung, from which injury he was
disabled for several months afterwards.
Colonel Randall joined the regiment a second time
and assumed command of the regiment at Washington, D.C., September 29,
1863, while it was en route to join the Army of the Cumberland near
Chattanooga. From this time forward
Colonel Randall had command of the regiment
After the retirement of major Cook from service,
Colonel Randall was the active field officer of the regiment down to the
time of his death.
Colonel Randall was an efficient officer and possessed
of superior ability and courage. He was cool and collected in
action, and in him more than any other officer was the regiment indebted
for its high order of discipline and established reputation for
gallantry. He met his death manfully in the discharge of duty, and
his loss was generally regretted.
