Joseph Jay enlisted at Skaneateles, New York on August 12, 1862
as was mustered into service with Company G as a corporal at the age of
21. He was promoted to sergeant on September 21, 1863 and to 1st
sergeant August 5, 1864, and to Sergeant Major of the Regiment on August 30,
1864.
He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company G on May 11, 1865,
under a commission dated May 11, 1865, rank same date. He was present at
final muster and brevetted Captain.
