Robert E. Hopkins was mustered into US service at
Syracuse, NY on September 17, 1862 at the age of 29, under a commission
as Captain dated October 4, 1862, rank September 10, 1862.
He was taken prisoner at Chancellorsville, Virginia on
May 3, 1863; paroled and returned to company near Williamsport, MD, July 14,
1863.
He was in command of the regiment during the winter of
1863-64 at Stevenson, Alabama.
Promoted to Major April 13, 1864 under a commission
dated February 29, 1864, rank January 20, 1864.
He left the regiment May 2, 1864 at Stevenson, Alabama
for the hospital at Nashville, Tennessee and resigned July 3, 1864.
