Abel G. Cook
Major
Lieutenant Colonel

Major Abel G. Cook was mustered in the U.S. service at Syracuse, N.Y. on September 18, 1862 at the age of 22, under a commission of Major dated October 4, 1862, rank September 8, 1862.

He was wounded severely in the foot at Chancellorsville, VA. on May 3, 1863, and went home.  He received a commission as Lt. Col. of the regiment dated March 17, 1863, rank March 1, 1863, but was not mustered.  Discharged by reason of wounds July 20, 1864.  Brevetted Colonel N.Y. Volunteers.

Except during the presence of Colonel Barnum, from the latter part of January to April, 1863, Major Cook had command of the regiment the principal part of the time from October 1862 to the time of his injury at Chancellorsville, and was the latter date active officer of the regiment.

He was generally respected by the officers and men, and his retirement from service was deeply regretted.
