Thomas Merriam was mustered into the U.S. service at Syracuse,
N.Y., September 17, 1862, at the age of 20, under a commission as 2nd
Lieutenant dated October 4, 1862, rank September 10, 1862. Promoted to
1st Lieutenant September 1, 1862, under a commission dated August 14, 1863,
rank June 24, 1863. Detached for duty at Elmira, New York, in connection
with the draft July, 26, 1863, and joined the company at Wauhatchie,
Tennessee, November 1, 1863.
He was wounded severely in the arm
and slightly in the leg at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, November 24,
1863. He was assigned to duty as the Quarter Master of the regiment when
Moses Summers was detached to Brigade
Staff April 22, 1864, at Stevenson, Alabama, and continued in the performance
of that duty until promoted to Captain at final muster and brevetted Major.
After
the war he served one term as County Treasurer of the County of Onondaga, was
Commander of the Root Post 151 of the G.A.R., and was a member of the Syracuse
Board of Aldermen.
