John Kohl enlisted August 31, 1862 as sergeant at the age of 26.
Detached for duty at Elmira, N.Y. on June 26, 1863. He was also detached
for duty as body guard to Major General Slocum, commanding Left Wing Februrary
10, 1865.
He received a commission as 1st Lieutenant dated June 7, 1865,
rank same date, but was not mustered. Brevetted Captain.
