Philip Echel was mustered into the U.S. service at Syracuse,
N.Y. at the age of 33, under a commission as 1st Lieutenant dated
October 4, 1862, rank September 2, 1862.
Lieutenant Echel was wounded in the arm and taken prisoner at
Chancellorsville, Virginia, may 3, 1863. He was paroled and sent to the
hospital, from whence he was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of
disability on December 21, 1863.
He was Brevetted Captain.
