Wednesday 1st October 1862
Wrote a letter home today. Received orders to go to Sandy Hook,
Maryland. was on guard at night in place of Oscar Baily.
Thursday 2nd October 1862
We got ready to march in the morning, but did not start until 3 pm
took the cars and arrived at Sandy Hook at 8 PM. Marched up on the hill and laid down for
the night.
Friday 3rd October 1862
Wrote a letter to Samuel Fuller. Andrew, Phillip and myself went
down to Harpers Ferry and up to Maryland Heights.
Saturday 4th October 1862
We drilled in the forenoon, then some of the boys went foraging and
brought home some fresh meats.
Sunday 5th October 1862
Wrote to cousin Carolyn Hall today. Had dress parade in the forenoon
and the preacher said a brief sermon.
Tuesday 7th October 1862
We received our cartridge boxes and gun equipment this morning, were
inspected by General Geary and staff.
Wednesday 9th October 1862
Drilled in the forenoon, squad drill in the afternoon. Received a
letter from home this morning.
Friday 10th October 1862
Wrote a letter home today, received a
copy of the Evening Post. It started raining and rained all night.
Saturday 11th October 1862
Sargent's and corporal's drill this morning. Received our ammunition
this afternoon.
Sunday 12th October 1862
Had an inspection of arms in the morning, in the PM preaching from
the chaplain.
Monday 13th October 1862
Was on guard at General Andrews headquarters this afternoon.
Tuesday 14th October 1862
Drilled all day
Wednesday 15th October 1862
Lots of drill today.
Thursday 16th October 1862
Was excused from drill today, received a letter from father and one
from Samuel. Heard a lot of heavy firing all day long from across the river.
Friday 17th October 1862
Wrote a letter home. Captain Ira Wood
came to visit us and brought a flag from the old 12th Regiment.
Saturday 18th October 1862
It was pretty cold last night. Didn't feel well and was excused from
drill. Wrote to Samuel.
Sunday 19th October 1862
Was excused from drill. Went on dress parade.
Monday 20th October 1862
Drilled in double quick. Had a review from Gen. Slocum. Received a
letter from Abner and Able.
Tuesday 21st October 1862
Was called up by the long roll at 2 in the morning, formed into line
and marched to Knoxville. At 9 AM we marched back again.
Wednesday 22nd October 1862
The wind blew very hard last night and all day long today. Was on
patrol guard on the road between Weverton and Sandy Hook.
Thursday 23rd October 1862
Was on patrol duty until 1 pm. Went on dress parade. James Hines is
pretty sick. Received a letter from home.
Friday 24th October 1862
Had an inspection of arms and a review. In the afternoon we had
plenty of drill. Received the Standard and the Evening Post.
Saturday 25th October 1862
Received orders to march. had two days rations. Packed everything in
our knapsacks. Waited till dress parade when the marching orders were countermanded.
Sunday 26th October 1862
Wrote a letter home. It started to
rain and rained all day and night.
Monday 27th October 1862
The wind blew hard all day. We drilled in the forenoon, was excused
from drill in the PM.
Tuesday 28th October 1862
We were ordered to march this morning. We started at 10 AM, crossed
over the river at Harpers Ferry and encamped 2 miles from the river. ( Louden Valley )
Wednesday 29th Oc 1862
Cleaned up the camp streets today, fixed our tents and wrote a
letter home.
Thursday 30th October 1862
We received our orders to march this morning. Fell into line and
started at 8 pm, passed through Harpers Ferry and encamped.
Friday 31st October 1862
We put up our tents and fixed up the camp. They sent 26 men from
each company for pickets and guards. Inspection of arms in the morning.
