Sunday 1st November 1863
Left the parole camp at 10 AM and marched to Annapolis and went on
board the steamer John Brooks. Started at noon and arrived at Baltimore at 4 PM and
anchored in the harbor.
Monday 2nd November 1863
Left the boat at 8 AM and went to the Union relief and got
breakfast. Marched about 2 miles through the city to the Pennsylvania RR Depot. We waited
until 4 PM when we took the cars for Pittsburgh. [letter]
Tuesday 3rd November 1863
We were about 50 miles from Harrisburg this morning at sunrise. We
crossed the Allegheny in the afternoon. Arrived at Pittsburgh at 10 PM and went to the
Solders Relief for supper. We then took the cars for Indianapolis.
Wednesday 4th November 1863
This morning we were at Patterson Ohio. At noon we stopped for about
an hour. Most of us took a walk around town. The people gave us all we wanted to eat.
Thursday 5th November 1863
We arrived at Indianapolis at sunrise this morning and marched to
the Convalescent Barracks where we got breakfast. Left Indy at 7 PM for louisville.
Friday 6th November 1863
Arrived at Jeffersonville opposite Louisville at 10 o'clock last
night and staid in the cars until morning. Drew two days rations in the morning. Left the
cars at 7 o'clock and marched down to the river and crossed over to Louisville on a Ferry
boat. Marched through the city about a mile to the Nashville RR Depot. We staid around
here until afternoon when we got dinner. About sundown we were marched down near the river
to a large brick building used as a solders Barracks. We staid there all Night. [letter]
Saturday 7th November 1863
Packed up this morning at 3 and after eating breakfast we marched to
the RR Depot and got aboard the cars. Left at 7 o'clock and after a pleasant ride of 12
hours we arrived at Nashville. We then left the cars and went to a large brick building
used by the government as a solders Barracks. It was built by the Rebel Gen. ZoLicoffer
for a hotel and contains 350 rooms.
Sunday 8th November 1863
We expected to leave this morning but didn't. Wrote a letter home
Monday 9th November 1863
Staid in camp all day.
Tuesday 10th November 1863
In the barracks all day. Went to the theater and saw Mazeppa.
Wednesday 11th November 1863
Was called up in the morning at 2 o'clock and after getting
breakfast and 2 days rations we left for Chattanooga RR Depot. An engine ran off the track
near the depot which hindered the train so we did not leave until sunrise. We arrived at
Talahoma about sundown. We got out of the cars and spent the night.
Thursday 12th November 1863
Left this morning at 10 and arrived at Stevenson at 4 PM and went
about 1/2 mile from town and camped in a piece of woods.
Friday 13th November 1863
Staid in the woods all day. Drew 3 days rations and made ourselves
comfortable.
Saturday 14th November 1863
Commenced to rain this morning at 4. Picked up and went down to the
Engine House. Waited there about 3 hours, then took the cars for Bridgeport. Got there
about 3 PM and after drawing 2 days rations we camped for the night.
Sunday 15th November 1863
Started for Lookout Valley this morning at 7 and after marching
about 5 miles we came to a small river. Made a bridge and crossed over. Marched about 5
miles to the village of Jasper where we spent the night.
Monday 16 November 1863
Started at 7 and after marching about a mile came to another river.
Crossed in a pontoon boat and after going about 3 miles we came to Kellys Ferry at dark.
Camped for the night.
Tuesday 17th Nov 1863
We crossed over this morning on pontoon boats and after drawing 2
days rations we started for the regiment. Got to the regiment at noon and found the boys
all well. In the afternoon I helped James Heines and Sargent Potter build a tent.
Wednesday 18th November 1863
James Heines, Dave Ore and I went to an old house about a mile from
camp and got some boards to fix out tent. Went down to the creek and done a big washing.
In the afternoon helped mud up the shanty.
Thursday 19th November 1863
Was detailed on fatigue duty in the morning. Went with about 60
others of our regiment to work on the road about a mile from the ferry. the boys in camp
were ordered out under arms today.
Friday 20th November 1863
Pleasant this morning but rained in the afternoon. [letter]
Saturday 21th November 1863
Rained hard last night and all day today. Nothing to do but keep out
of the wet.
Sunday 22nd November 1863
Had an inspection of arms in the afternoon. Had orders to march the
next morning at daylight., The order was countermanded. [letter]
Monday 23rd November 1863
Went out with the fatigue party to work on the fort near the picket
line about 1/2 mile from camp. Heard heavy firing all day in the direction of Chattanoga.
Tuesday 24th November 1863
The regiment started this morning at half past 6 and marched up to
Lookout Mountain. We halted at the foot and loaded our rifles. Our Division then formed a
line of battle and marched up the side of the mountain. After a hard fight of 5 hours in
which we captured 1400 Reb prisioners, two cannon, and 4 flags the Rebs were driven off
the mountain. Our regiment went into battle with 225 men and lost 11 killed and 50
wounded.
Wednesday 25th November 1863
Went to bury James Hines this morning. Our division fell into line
and marched down the Mountain and across Chattanoga Valley to Mission Ridge. Our regiment
supported Knapps Bbattery and didn't get into the battle. We lay on the battlefield all
night.
Thursday 26th November 1863
Started after the Rebs at 10 o'clock and followed them untill 11 at
night. The advance captured a wagon train a short distance from us.
Friday 27th November 1863
Started at sunrise and came up to the enemy at a pass in the
mountains near the village of Ringold at 10 o'clock. Our Brigade went into battle on the
right of the line and after fighting about 3 hours the Rebs ran leaving us in charge of
the pass. Our regiment lost 3 killed and 15 wounded and captured two flags. Camped in the
town of Ringgold.
Saturday 28th November 1863
It rained nearly all day. The regiment fixed up ther quarters in an
old building. At night we all went on picket duty. The night was very cold. [letter]
Sunday 29th November 1863
The day was quite cold. The Regiment came off picket in the
afternoon. We expected to leave during the night.
Monday 30th November 1863
Quite cold again today. The most of our forces were busy tearing up
the railroad tracks.
