Sunday 1st March 1863
Wrote a letter home today. Went over to the commissary in the
forenoon. In the afternoon Mr. Champlain came to see us and brought me a hat and a letter
from home.
Monday 2nd March 1863
We all started for the regiment this morning. Bill Jones and I
walked up the railroad. Got to the regiment at noon. The quartermaster brought up our
knapsacks. Set up our tents and spent the night.
Tuesday 3rd March 1863
Was excused from duty by the doctor. All men in the regiment went to
work on the fort.
Wednesday March 4th 1863
The weather was quite cold today. Went up the side hill and cut some
pine boughs. Mr. Champlin went home today.
Thursday 5th March 1863
Wrote a letter home in the forenoon.
Bought a rubber blanket from Hank Allen.
Friday 6th March 1863
A lot of express boxes came to regiment.
Saturday 7th March 1863
It rained hard all day. Wrote a letter to Aunt Sophronia.
Sunday 8th March 1863
Cleaned up our guns and equipment. Had an inspection of arms at 4 PM
General Green inspected our camp.
Monday 9th March 1863
Took down our tents and widened our street. Went on duty today.
Tuesday 10th March 1863
Brought rails to make our tents. It snowed and rained all day.
Wednesday 11th March 1863
Brought more rails and built foundations for our tents. drilled in
the afternoon.
Thursday 12th March 1863
Drilled in the forenoon and afternoon. Received a letter from home.
Friday 13th March 1863
We marched down to the old camp and was inspected by General Green.
The wind blew hard and cold from the west. [letter]
Saturday 14th March 1863
Drilled in the forenoon and cleaned our guns in the afternoon.
Received another letter from home. [letter]
Sunday 15th March 1863
Had an inspection by Col. Barnum. received a letter from Samuel.
Monday 16th March 1863
Drilled forenoon and afternoon. Dress parade for the first time in
this camp. Moved to our new tent. Wrote to Able.
Tuesday 17th March 1863
Had a review by General Green on the flats by the Grist mill. Had no
Drill or parade.
Wednesday 18th March 1863
Drilled in the forenoon and afternoon. The clothing came for the
regiment.
Thursday 19th March 1863
Went to the old camp. Had a review by General Geary in the forenoon.
Was reviewed again in the afternoon by General Joseph Hooker.
Friday 20th March 1863
Had no drill today. It snowed and rained all day.
Saturday 21st March 1863
Snowed and rained all day. Short drill in the forenoon.
Sunday 22nd March 1863
Inspection of arms and tents by General Randall. received a letter
and a diary from home. Wrote a letter home.
Monday 23rd March 1863
Drilled forenoon and afternoon.
Tuesday 24th March 1863
Inspection of arms by Captain Randall in the afternoon
Wednesday 25th March 1863
Drilled in the forenoon. Washed my clothes in the afternoon. It
rained hard last night. Warm and pleasant today.
Thursday 26th March 1863
Drill and dress parade.
Friday 27th March 1863
Battalion drill in the forenoon and afternoon by Capt. Randall. It
was warm and pleasant.
Saturday 28th March 1863
It rained hard all last night and again today. No drill or dress
parade. Received a letter from home.
Sunday 29th March 1863
Had an inspection of arms. Got a pass from Capt. Randall to go to
Belle Plain. Got to Bella Plain at 3 PM and went to the 24th to visit Oren and Merrick.
Monday 30th March 1863
Left Bella Plains at 10 am got to camp at noon. Drilled in the
afternoon. The weather was warm and pleasant.
Tuesday 31th March 1863
It snowed all last night, started raining in the morning and rained
till 2 in the afternoon, then cleared off warm.
