Friday 1st January 1864
It was quite warm last evening but the weather changed about 9
o'clock and it commenced freezing by morning and it was mighty cold. Our overcoats that
were wet from the rain last night froze stiff on out backs. We had to sit pretty close to
the fire, for while one side was thawing out, the other side was freezing.
Saturday 2nd January 1864
It was cold as ever last night. The weather today was pleasant and
cold.
Sunday 3rd January 1864
The weather was quite cold today.
Monday 4th January 1864
The weather was quite warm today and it started to rain in the
afternoon.
Tuesday 5th January 1864
The regiment left camp this morning for Bridgeport. They came down
to the Ferry and drew rations. All of the men were detailed for guard duty at the Ferry.
We were paid off. Rained all day.
Wednesday 6th January 1864
We have but very little to do here. Each one stands guard hours
every day. There don't appear to be any signs of our leaving here for some time. It was
quite pleasant today.
Thursday 7th January 1864
Wrote home in the afternoon. Drew 5
days rations in the afternoon. Lots of Rebel prisoners came in the evening.
Friday 8th January 1864
It was quite cold today It rained nearly all day and commenced
freezing in the evening. It snowed a little during the night.
Saturday 9th January 1864
It was pleasant today. All we had to do was to cut some wood and set
by the fire.
Sunday 10th January 1864
Went out on the mountain today. We came across a large flock of
turkeys. I shot a large Gobbler. Got back to camp at dark.
Monday 11 January 1864
It was quite pleasant today. Took my boots over to the shoemaker at
the 3rd Ohio to have them mended.
Tuesday 12th January 1864
Harrison and I went out hunting in the afternoon. Came across a
large flock of Turkeys but couldn't get a good shot.
Wednesday 13th January 1864
Loaded all our wagons on the flatboats this morning. Got on board a
steamer and started for Bridgeport. We got to Bridgeport at 4 PM and unloaded the wagons.
We then got in the cars and started for Stevenson at 8 o'clock. We got there about 10 and
marched up to the mountains where we slept for the night.
Thursday 14th January 1864
Left Stevenson for the Regiment this morning. Found our company
about a mile from there guarding a railroad bridge. Lieutenant Colille gave me a package
and a letter from home. Wrote a letter home.
Friday 15th January 1864
Worked all day cutting poles for our new tent. We drew the poles and
the stones for the fireplace with an old mule.
Saturday 16th January 1864
Worked on our new tent all day. We tore down the old tent and moved
into the one left by John Pollock and Company.
Sunday 17th January 1864
Was on guard all day. Inspection of arms in the forenoon. Wrote a
letter to Horatio.
Monday 18th January 1864
Worked at the tent all day. Shot a Hawk.
Tuesday 19th January 1864
We moved into our new tents today. Went down to the creek after
ducks but didn't get any.
Wednesday 20th January 1864
It was quite warm and pleasant today. Went hunting and shot 3
squirrels.
Thursday 21st January 1864
Shot another squirrel this morning. Cooked the squirrels for dinner
and worked on the tent all day.
Friday 22nd January 1864
Was on guard duty all day.
Saturday 23rd January 1864
It was quite warm and pleasant today. Wrote
home.
Sunday 24th January 1864
Had an inspection of arms in the forenoon. In the afternoon went
down to the creek and shot a squirrel and a duck.
Monday 25th January
Had a general inspection this afternoon by the Brigade Inspection.
Tuesday 26th January 1864
We worked in the camp today making a Cedar hedge around the
Lieutenant's tents and an arch over the street.
Wednesday 27th January 1864
On guard duty today. The boys were busy all day cleaning up the
camp. We have had very pleasant weather the past fortnight.
Thursday 28th January 1864
Fired our guns at a mark today.
Friday 29th January 1864
Had company drill in the forenoon. In the afternoon the men drew
what clothes they needed.
Saturday 30th January 1864
It rained a little so we didn't have any drill today.
Sunday 31st January 1864
Was on guard today. It was quite warm. It started raining in the
evening. Received a letter from home and answered it.
