Was in guard first relief. Wrote a letter to Able. Went on Brigade
drill in the afternoon. Received a letter from Abner.
Saturday Jan 3rd 1863
Andrew was sent to the hospital at 5 AM in the morning. Came of
guard at 9.
Monday 4th Jan. 1863
Had an inspection of arms in the forenoon. In the afternoon wrote a letter home and one to Samuel.
Monday 5th 1863
Our division was relieved by General Slocum and went on picket in
the afternoon. The day was pleasant as was the night.
Tuesday 6th Jan 1863
Battalion drill in the forenoon. Skirmish drill in the afternoon.
The weather was cold and the wind blew hard.
Thursday Jan. 8th 1863
Brigade drill in the forenoon and battalion drill in the afternoon
in front of the camp. Some of the officers too drunk to go on dress parade.
Friday 9th Jan. 1863
Brigade drill in the forenoon and battalion drill in the afternoon
The regiment received their express boxes. Co C had a free fight.
Saturday 10th Jan. 1863
Battalion drill in the forenoon. It commenced raining at noon and
rained all day long.
Sunday 11th Jan. 1863
Cleared off pleasant in the morning. Had an inspection of arms.
Monday 12th Jan. 1863
Cut poles for our tent foundation. Brigade drill in the afternoon.
Tuesday 13th Jan. 1863
Laid up the foundation for our tents in the morning and then went on
drill. The regiment drew there new clothes in the afternoon. Received a letter from home
today.
Wednesday 14th Jan. 1863
Went out on picket. Was on reserve with 30 others. Lieutenant
Coleville was officer of the post. Three men of the 137th deserted our outpost at night. [letter]
Thursday 15th Jan 1863
Came off from picket at noon. Fixed up our tents. Got a letter from
home and Merrick Stonewell. It rained all night.
Friday 16th Jan. 1863
Cleared off pleasant in the morning. Had company drill in the AM and
were given orders to march at short notice. We packed our knapsacks and haversacks.
Saturday 17th Jan. 1863
Had company drill in the forenoon. Orders came to march next morning
but at night the order was countermanded.
Sunday 18th Jan. 1863
Wrote a letter home. Was ordered to take down our tents and pack
them up. Got ready to start in the morning. Col. Barnum came in the evening.
Monday 19th Jan.. 1863
Was ready to start at daylight but we didn't fall into line until 11
AM. Had a short speech from Col. Barnum. Started at 2 in the afternoon and marched about 2
miles then encamped for the night.
Tuesday Jan. 20th 1863
Started at 7 AM and after marching about 20 miles we encamped for
the night one mile from Dumfries. It commenced to rain in the evening and rained hard all
night.
Wednesday 21th Jan. 1863
Started at 8 AM and passed through Dumfries then stopped until 3 PM
when we crossed the creek and encamped for the night one mile behind Dunfries. It rained
all day and the mud was awful deep.
Thursday 22th Jan. 1863
It rained all night. Was on gun guard. Started at half past 8 and
marched back to the creek to get our rations. Started again at 3 PM and marched 4 miles
where we encamped for the night on a steep side hill.
Friday 23rd Jan. 1863
Remained here until noon when we went back 2 miles to draw rations
again. We got back and started on again at 3 PM and after marching about 4 miles we
encamped 4 miles from Aquia Creek.
Saturday 24th Jan. 1863
Was on picket guard. Left camp at 7 and arrived Stafford Court House
at noon. Stayed here until the regiment came up when we were dismissed and encamped for
the night.
Sunday 25th Jan. 1863
Started at half past 8 and after marching 5 miles we got to the
landing and encamped for the night.
Monday 26th Jan. 1863
Was detailed with 10 others to go to the landing. Went down at 7 and
stayed until 9 when we were sent back. The regiment moved about a mile to the new camp
ground where we cleaned up the streets and fixed up our tents.
Tuesday 27th Jan. 1863
Wrote a letter home. James Harrison and 8 others went on fatigue
duty at the landing. The paymaster paid us off. It rained nearly all day.
Wednesday 28th Jan. 1863
Was detailed along with 6 others to go on picket for three days. Got
ready to start when we were told we were not needed. It rained and snowed all day. Read a
letter from father.
Thursday 29th Jan. 1863
It stopped snowing this morning and cleared off pleasant. The snowed
about 6 inches deep. Wrote a letter home.
Friday 30th Jan. 1863
It was quite pleasant all day. All the men in camp were called out
to clean the streets. Have a hard cold.
Saturday 31st Jan.1863
Went to the doctor this morning. Got some medicine and was excused
from duty.
