Tuesday 1st December 1863
Left Ringgold for Chattanooga at one o'clock this morning after
burning the town. 22 men including myself were sent to guard the ambulance train. Got into
our old camp at Lookout Valley at 10 o'clock after having marched about 35 miles.
Wednesday 2nd December 1863
Was in camp all day.
Thursday 3rd December 1863
Had a grand review of our division by Gen'ls Hooker and Thomas.
Friday 4th December 1863
We cleaned our guns and equipment today. Got our orders from the
Lieutenant and went to the commissary for some flour and meal.
Saturday 5th December 1863
We didn't do much today. We were told to be ready to leave camp in
the morning.
Sunday 6th December 1863
Had no inspection. It rained all day.
Monday 7th December 1863
Left the camp early in the morning. Went over beyond the Brigade
hqts. and commenced building Winter Quarters. Recd. a letter from home and answered it
this evening.
Tuesday 8th December 1863
We all went over to work this morning. Order came down to have 6 men
from each company sent to fatigue. Went to work on the road over Lookout Mountain. It
rained so hard we went back to camp. Got there at 3 o'clock.
Wednesday 9th December 1863
Packed everything up this morning and moved over to our new camp. We
got all the tents set up and slept in it overnight.
Thursday 10th December 1863
Went out on fatigue this morning. Worked on the road over Lookout
Mountain. The men left in camp didn't work on their tents much today. They all went to
work on the officers quarters.
Friday 11 December 1863
Worked on our tents all day. Brought stones up from the creek and
built our fireplace. Hanson built the fireplace and I tended mason.
Saturday 12th December 1863
Worked on the tents all forenoon. It rained in the afternoon. Wrote
a letter home.
Sunday 13th December 1863
It rained all day.
Monday 14th December 1863
Went on fatigue duty this morning at Lookout Mountain. It rained
hard in the morning but cleared off nice in the afternoon.
Tuesday 15th December 1863
The regiment went to General Hookers Headquarters and presented him
with The flags we took from Lookout Mountain And Ringgold.
Wednesday 16th December 1863
Worked on the Col. Quarters all day. Commenced raining in the
evening and rained hard all night.
Thursday 17th December 1863
The whole regiment was sent to work on the road leading to the
landing. Our tents being entirely out of hardtack Lon Cronk and myself were sent outside
of the picket line about 5 miles to a Grist Mill an bought a bushel of flour and a half
bushel of meal.
Friday 18th December 1863
Went to the regiment to work on the road. The weather was quite
cold.
Saturday 19th December 1863
It froze hard last night. Worked on the road again today.
Sunday 20th December 1863
No work today. Col. Barnum and Sargent Major Berdes started for home
this morning. I helped carry there baggage down to quartermaster.
Monday 21st December 1863
Worked at the camp all day helping to build a guard house.
Tuesday 22nd December 1863
Was in camp all day. Worked all day cleaning up the camp. Read a
letter from home and answered it in the evening.
Wednesday 23rd December 1863
Went to work on the road in the morning. Got done at noon and went
back to camp. Took Nash to the provost Guards.
Thursday 24th December 1863
Worked in camp all day building a stable for the officers horses.
Friday 25th December 1863
Friday being Christmas Day we didn't have any duty to do, so we
staid in camp and ate our 3/4 rations of hardtack and pork for Christmas dinner. In the
afternoon we went to bid good bye to CO NY who was going home to recruit.
Saturday 26th December 1863
Commenced raining last night and kept it up all day today. Recd. a
letter from home.
Sunday 27th December 1863
It rained nearly all day. Cleaned our guns and equipment but
inspection didn't come off. [letter]
Monday 28th December 1863
Our division went to see the 111 P&V who were going home to
recruit.
Tuesday 29th December 1863
Was detailed with 50 others of our regiment to go to Kelly's Ferry
to guard the division wagons. Got to the Ferry at 5 in the afternoon.
Wednesday 30th December 1863
Loaded some of the wagons on a flatboat and sent them down to
Bridgeport.. Went to the commissary and bought a box of hardtack.
Thursday 31st December 1863
It commenced raining last evening and kept it up all night. We all
got pretty soaked and as we didn't have any tents we got under the wagons to keep out of
the wet.
