Monday 1st Dec. 1862

NO drill today. Rumors that we are to march tomorrow are around camp.

Tuesday 2nd Dec. 1862

Was called up by the long roll call and ordered to march with one days rations. Started at 7 AM an the road to Winchester. Got to Berryville at sundown. Went on reserve picket.

Wed 3rd Dec. 1862

Was not relieved from picket duty until 4 PM when we started on for Winchester. Marched 5 miles and encamped. Andrew, James, and Harrison went on picket.

Thursday 4th Dec. 1862

Started a 7 AM for Winchester, halted about 2 miles from Winchester. The boys confiscated 25 fat hogs. Passed through the city and up the hill to the forts, then started back for Bolavar. After marching 7 miles we stopped for the night.

Friday 5th Dec. 1862

Started at 7 AM and marched 12 miles at double quick. General Geary gave General Green a blowing up for marching us so fast.

Started snowing so we encamped.

Saturday 6th Dec. 1862

It snowed 6 inches last night. Started a 7 AM for Bolivar and arrived at 12. It was mighty cold and the wind blew hard.

Sunday 7th Dec. 1862

It was pretty cold today. Wrote a letter home.

Monday 8th dec. 1862

Company drill in the AM. Battalion drill in the PM by Capt. Ira Wood. Saw a large fire in Charleston in the evening. Wrote to Able Fuller. (Father of the girl who later became his second wife)

Tuesday 9th Dec. 1862

The orders came today for us to march. Wrote a letter home and got a letter from home and one from Aunt Marina.

Wednesday 10th Dec. 1862

Started at 6 AM and passed up Louden Valley. Encamped for the night one mile beyond Hillsboro. The day was warm and pleasant and the night very cold.

Thursday 11th Dec. 1862

Started at sunrise, stopped at noon and ate dinner in a small woods by the side of the road. Encamped for the night 3 miles beyond Leesboro.

Friday 12th Dec. 1862

Started at daybreak and after marching about 7 miles we encamped. Was excused from picket.

Saturday 13th Dec. 1862

Was on picket. started an hour before sunrise and arrived at Fairfax Court House at 4 PM. Went into the woods and encamped. Was excused from picket.

 Sunday 14th Dec. 1862

Started at daylight. Went with the pioneers ahead of the division to mend the roads. Encamped for the night one mile from Occogaon Creek.

Monday 15th Dec. 1862

Started at sunrise and crossed Occogaon Creek at Wolf Run Shoals. Encamped for the night 4 miles from Dumfries.

Tuesday 16th Dec. 1862

Commenced raining at 4 in the morning. Started at 7. It rained hard until 10 AM and we encamped at noon one mile from Dumfries.

Wednesday 17th Dec. 1862

Started back for Fairfax at 8 AM and went with 24 others of our company to guard the ambulance train. Got into camp at 9 in the evening.

Thursday 18th Dec. 1862

Started at 5 AM and crossed Occoquon Creek at noon. Encamped for the night 8 miles beyond the creek.

Friday 19th December 1862

Started day 19th Dec. at 7 AM and marched to within 1 mile of Fairfax Station. Went into the woods and camped. Rec. a letter from Samual today.

Saturday 20th Dec. 1862

Went to the quartermaster and got our box. Heard firing all day in the direction of the Potomac.

Sunday 21st December 1862

Last evening was very frosty. Had an inspection of arms in the morning. Did nothing the rest of the day.

Monday 22nd Dec. 1862

Wrote a letter home. Cut wood in the afternoon.

Tuesday 23rd Dec. 1862

Was on guard, third relief.

Wednesday 24th Dec. 1862

Was relieved from guard duty at 9 am. Didn't drill any. Went on dress parade in the afternoon.

Thursday 25th Dec. 1862

This day being Christmas we were all excused from duty except guard and picket. Wrote a letter to Aunt Marina. James Heines and I went into the woods and fired our revolvers at a mark. Received a letter from Able.

Friday 26th Dec. 1862

Had company drill in the forenoon and battalion drill in the afternoon.

Saturday 27th Dec. 1862

Had an inspection of arms in the forenoon. No drill in the afternoon. Received a letter from home. The weather is very pleasant.
