Saturday 1st April 1865

Went on picket this morning.

Sunday 2nd April 1865

Came off picket this morning. Dress parade in the afternoon.

Monday 3rd April 1865

Had monthly inspection this morning. Inspected by General Geary. Went to Goldsboro in the afternoon.

Tuesday 4th April 1865

The 2nd Division was reviewed by General Mower formerly of the 17th Corps, but now in command of the 20th. Just before the review.

Wednesday 5th April 1865

Nothing going on except drills and dress parades.  [letter]

Thursday 6th April 1865

The news came today that Richmond was taken. The Brigade fell into line and Marched to Brigade headquarters. When General Barnum read us the official dispatch from General Grant announcing the capture of Richmond, maybe we didn't cheer much.

Friday 7th April 1865

No drills or dress parades.

Saturday 8th April 1865

Went on picket this morning the weather being warm and pleasant.

Sunday 9th April 1865

Came off picket at 10 o'clock. We received orders to be ready to march tomorrow.

Monday 10th April 1865

We left camp at 6 AM. Marched through Goldsboro and took the road to Smithfield. The First Division had a skirmish with the Rebs in a swamp a short distance ahead of us. It rained nearly all day. Camped after dark.

Tuesday 11 April 1865

Started at daylight the 2nd Division in the advance position. We marched to Smithfield about 16 miles. The weather was very warm and some of the men were sun struck.
