Kellys Ferry( near Stevenson) January 7, 1864 Dear Parents; I am at Kellys Ferry, three miles from our old camp. All of our Division has been sent back on the railroad beyond Bridgeport. 50 of our regiment were sent down here a week ago to guard the division property at the Ferry until they could get transportation for it to Bridgeport. We expected when we came here that we wouldn't have to stay here more than a couple of days but I don't see us leaving here before a week or so. There don't any of us know where the division is agoing to stop but I suppose it will be somewhere near Stevenson. The weather hasn't been very pleasant since we have been here at the Ferry. It commenced to rain the day before New Years. That night it commenced snowing and freezing and New Years morning it was about as cold as I have seen it since I left New York State. It has been pretty cold here ever since but I suppose we'll have a January thaw before long. We are guarding a lot of hospital store and about 50 old wagons and ambulances. I suppose they will send them off as soon as they can bring up some flatboats from Bridgeport........ Oliver |
