Louisville Kentucky November 6 1863 Dear Parents; We are now at Louisville waiting for the cars to take us on to Chattanooga. We got here this morning, and as I don't expect to leave before tonight I thought I would drop you a few lines and let you know how we made out in our travels. We marched down to Annapolis after we left the Parole camp with the guns and ammunition they had delt out to us. We got on board the steamer John Broooks. We got to Baltimore about 4 in the afternoon and staid on board of the boat until the next morning, when we went up to Union Relief and got a good breakfast. We didn't leave Baltimore until 5 in the afternoon. The next morning we were 50 miles beyond Harrisburg. we got to Pittsburgh about 10 in the morning and ate supper at Pittsburgh Union Relief. We left Pittsburgh for Indianapolis about 12 o'clock. We stopped the next day for about an hour at a village called Canton in Ohio. The inhabitants gave us all we wanted to eat. The cars ran all night and the next morning we found ourselves at Indianapolis, The capital of Indiana. We staid here until noon when we left for Louisville. We got to Jeffersonville on the opposite side of the river from Louisville about 10 o'clock last night and staid in the cars all night. This morning we crossed over on the ferry boat to Louisville. You see we don't make very fast time but I expect we will get to Chattanooga before our enlistment is up. We have had a very pleasant ride so far. We rode in the passenger cars so far, but I guess it will be cattle cars the rest of the way. There are about 550 of us in all. There are some from almost every state. I will write again when I get to the Regiment. Oliver |
