Brooks Station, Va.

March 5th 1883

Dear Friend;

I havn't much news to write. Everything goes on after the same old sort. When the weather is pleasant we have plenty of drills and dress parades. But when it snows and rains as it did today we keep inside of our shanties. We have had more snow and rain since the first of march than we had all last winter and fall together. It rained and snowed all last Monday night and Tuesday. Last night it snowed about 6 inches, and it is raining today.

You asked if we had any Copperheads among us. We have got two or three in our company, but as long as they have plenty of rations, they don't BLAT much. ( A copperhead is a northern solder with southern sympathies )

Last tuesday all of the men in the regiment who had thrown away there knapsacks on the march, were furnished with new ones, and all of the men who had home made shirts had to take two government shirts at $1.50 each, and the men who had bought boots had to take shoes at $2.00 each. Now I have 4 shirts on hand. Most of the men have shirts that they brought from home. If you know of anyone in need of shirts send them down here because they can get them dirt cheap when the regiment leaves here.

Major Randall has command of the regiment, and is well liked by the men. There is one Captain and two Lieutenants from the old 12th in our Regiment. Most of the regiment don't like it very well to have these men put in ahead of our officers but Col. Barnum or LITTLE GOD as some of the men call him has it all his own way down here..........

Oliver
