Camp Parole, Annapolis August 2, 1863 Dear Parents; I received Georgia's letter yesterday. I havn't much to write except that I am alive and well, and that the weather is awful hot down this way. We have got a new Colonel to command the camp here. He has put a guard around the camp and lets no one go out of camp without a pass from him. The men have been allowed to go out of camp when they liked, but as our new Col. wants to show his authority I suppose we will have to stay around HOME as we call it, for the solders call every place home where they must leave their blankets over night. I received the Journal you sent me with your last letter, but I havn't seen the weekly Standard or Harpers in over two weeks........ We have a reading room here in camp. It is a first rate place to go to kill time in this hot weather. I always come here to the reading room to write, for they keep pens and ink for the SNOGERS to write with. The room is full this morning with 20 men who are writing letters. I havn't anything more to write so we will give you the rest of the news next week. Oliver |
