Onondaga June 28th 1865 Dear Friend. I take this opportunity to write you a few lines to let you know I am back in good old Onondaga again, safe and sound. The regiment arrived in Syracuse on the 17th. We were paid off and discharged on the 23rd so the 149th is a regiment no longer. I sent you the Weekly Standard giving an account of our Reception. It was a pretty good one. The folks are all well. Georgia appears to enjoy as good health asshe ever did. Mother was sick last April but is nearly well now. As for me I am Fat and Stout as usual. My journey down south has agreed with my health first rate. The 122nd NY which left Syracuse for the war three weeks before we came home returned yesterday. They also had a good reception. The same as the 149th. George Lintner, who used to make cigars for Amber came home with the regiment. He is going to work for Amber making cigars. I think all the boys are glad to be home, and glad to think that their job is done, and very well done. The rebellion is so smashed there isn't even a grease spot left. It is a bitter pill for the copperheads to swallow. They will have to take them straight down even though they may make an awful face. I wish to see you and have a long talk but I shall have to wait until the snow flies. Please write as soon as it is convenient. From your friend Oliver |
