Lookout Valley December 27,1863 Dear Parents; I ain't as hard up for paper as I was , for Brigade Sutler has come and he sell paper and envelops at a cent and a half each which is quite reasonable in this part of the world. There is a rumor in camp that we are going back to guard the railroad beyond Bridgeport. We have got everything fixed for winter quarters but it rations arn't any more plenty here we will all be willing to pack up and travel. The weather has been very soft down here for the past two days. It has rained nearly all the time and the mud holes have got to be of unknown depth. Captain Seymore has been appointed Provost Marshal on General Geary's staff. I hope that Lieut... Coville comes back soon and takes command of the company. The 60th, 70th, and 102 regiments have nearly all reenlisted for three years and are going home to recruit, leaving only the 137th and ours in the Brigade. There is a rumor in camp that our regiment is also going home to recruit, but I can't see it so, for i think we will see the war ended sometime before our year and 8 months are up. I see they are paying a pretty good bounty now. I think that now is the time for the patriotic home guard to enlist. We have all been out to see a man marched around the division to the tune of the Rogues March. He was caught on the battlefield picking dead solders pockets. He was taken in front of the division and they shaved his head. He was then marched up and down in front of the division with a board on his back with the words coward, and robbing the dead . This was altogether too good for him............. Oliver |
