Savannah 24 Jan. 1865 Dear Parents; I Haven't had a letter from you since the one on Jan. 1st but as we expect to leave for Charleston in a few days, I thought I would write you and tell you that our Provost duty in Savannah played out. Of course the 3rd brigade will be the first to enter Charleston so we will again have the honor of doing Provost duty for a couple of weeks in that famous town. General Geary was relieved by General Grover of the 19th army corps. This corps has been sent here from the Shenandoah Valley to guard Savannah. General Geary says that we are going to have a short but glorious campaign and that he can't afford to leave any of the 20th corps behind. So of course we will have to go along and get our share of the hard knocks and the glory that goes along with it. The 14th Corps and part of the 20th crossed the savannah River a few days ago but it was so awful muddy that they had to come back. It was reported that we are now going to Hilton Head on transports. They are hoping for some of the wagons every day. I was down to he wharf this morning. I think there are enough vessels in the harbor to carry half the army if they wanted to send them. They cleared the torpedoes and obstructions out of the main channel of the river so that the vessels drawing up to 16 feet can come up. JAN. 25th We have just received orders to march tomorrow morning at 6 o'clock, so of course we will have to foot it. I will write again as soon as I get a chance. please write as soon as you get this. Oliver |
