Camp near Kingston Ga. May 20th 1864 Dear Parents; As we come to another stopping place I thought I would write a few lines to let you know we are still chasing the Johneys. We have been on the march since last Tuesday when I wrote my last letter. Wednesday we marched about 20 miles. Yesterday we went about 10 miles. Our skirmishers were doing the fighting. Their rear guard was the reason we didn't go any faster. The Rebs made a stand last night about sundown but our artillery soon set them to running again. Our army is chasing the Rebs past every cross road. Our lines extend across the land for 10 miles. Our division marched across the fields and through the woods all day yesterday. The baggage wagons and artillery go the road, and the Infantry take it cross lots. Some of the prisoners that have been taken said that they were going to stop and make a stand at Kingston, but our forces drove them out yesterday, so I suppose we will have to chase them to Atlanta, which is about 60 miles away. Only 4 days of easy marching if the Rebs don't hinder us. I suppose you have heard about the battle of last Sunday and who was killed or wounded in our outfit. Our company was lucky. Charles Horton, one of the new recruits is missing. There wasn't but one killed, Andersag of company B. Some of the companies had quite a number wounded. The doctor says that most of them we hit by the regiment that was behind us that fired into us. Our flag was one of the four that was placed at the top of the hill in plain sight of the Rebs. They fired at us all afternoon and it is full of bullet holes. All four of our cannon were loaded nearly to the muzzle with canister. I got the Standard of May 11th today. We get our mail nearly every other day so there isn't any danger of me not getting any of your letters, so you needn't stop writing. Our Division will be in the rear of the Corps today. It is about 10:00 and we havn't started yet. The weather is getting to be rather hot but all the boys are standing it first rate. Oliver |
