Parole camp October 16 1863 Dear Sister. You see I am in the old parole camp yet. There is no one left in camp now except the men belonging to the 11th and 12th corps. There is about 400 of them. I suppose the reason why we were not put off is that it isn't safe to send a small group of men through Tennessee. They keep a large guard around camp but we generally get out when we really want to. There are plenty of chestnuts around here. I have been out several times and have gathered a lot of them. If you got last weeks Harper's Weekly you will see a picture of Libby Prison. It looks as natural as can be. I used to live on the middle floor at the end of the building.. The room inside of the building looks natural enough to, except for the tables. We didn't have any of them things in our rooms. You wanted to know how my cough and my side was getting along. My side got well and I havn't seen anything of my cough since I left home. Please write as soon as you get this letter. Oliver |
